Are Caffeine Supplements FSA/HSA Eligible?

Caffeine supplements are not eligible for reimbursement with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA).

Why Are Caffeine Supplements Not FSA/HSA Eligible?

Caffeine supplements are generally sold in pill, capsule, or powder form and are marketed for boosting energy, improving alertness, or enhancing athletic performance. Because these uses are related to general health and wellness rather than the treatment of a specific medical condition, they do not qualify as medical care under IRS Code Section 213(d).

According to the SIGIS Eligible Product List Criteria, dietary supplements are not considered eligible expenses, even if they claim health or performance benefits. Since caffeine is classified as a stimulant supplement, it falls into this excluded category.

What’s Not Covered?

  • Over-the-counter caffeine pills or capsules marketed for energy or alertness

  • Caffeine powders and tablets promoted for fitness or endurance

  • Supplements containing caffeine as a performance enhancer

  • Any general-use caffeine product, even with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)

LMN and Exceptions

Caffeine supplements are not eligible under any circumstances. A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) cannot make these products reimbursable.
