Yes, hearing aids are eligible for purchase with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA).
Why Are Hearing Aids FSA/HSA Eligible?
Hearing aids are medical devices used to treat hearing loss—a diagnosed medical condition—and therefore qualify as eligible medical expenses under IRS Code Section 213(d). These devices are used to improve hearing function and quality of life for individuals with partial or total hearing impairment.
According to the SIGIS Eligible Product List Criteria, hearing aids and many associated accessories are fully FSA- and HSA-eligible.
FSA- and HSA-eligible hearing aid products include:
Prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids
Behind-the-ear (BTE), in-the-ear (ITE), and in-the-canal (ITC) models
Rechargeable or battery-powered hearing aids
Hearing amplifiers designed for individuals with hearing loss (not general sound amplification)
Hearing aid accessories such as batteries, cleaning kits, and drying systems
Custom earmolds and replacement parts
These items are eligible whether purchased with a prescription or over the counter, as long as they are designed to assist with hearing function.
What’s Not Covered?
General-use sound amplifiers or hearing enhancement devices marketed for non-medical purposes—such as improving audio in public spaces or while watching TV—are not eligible. Earbuds, wireless headsets, and consumer audio devices are also not covered.
Products that do not have a medical function or are marketed for lifestyle or recreational use do not meet the eligibility criteria.
