Are Joint Supplements FSA/HSA Eligible?

Yes, joint supplements are eligible for purchase with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA), but only if they contain glucosamine and/or chondroitin as the main active ingredient.

Why Are Certain Joint Supplements FSA/HSA Eligible?

Under IRS Code Section 213(d) and according to the  SIGIS Eligible Product List Criteria , joint supplements with glucosamine and/or chondroitin as the primary ingredient are considered eligible medical expenses. These ingredients are commonly used to support joint health and are often recommended for individuals managing osteoarthritis or joint discomfort.

FSA- and HSA-eligible joint supplements must meet both of the following criteria:

  • Glucosamine and/or chondroitin is the main active ingredient

  • The product is clearly labeled as intended for joint health

Examples of eligible products include:

  • Glucosamine-only supplements

  • Glucosamine + chondroitin combinations

Brands such as Osteo-Bi-Flex®, Cosamin D®, or Flex-a-min®

What’s Not Covered?

Joint supplements that do not list glucosamine or chondroitin as a primary active ingredient are not eligible. This includes:

  • Turmeric, MSM, or collagen-based blends

  • General joint health supplements with herbal ingredients

  • Products labeled as dietary supplements without a defined medicinal ingredient

  • Multivitamins or immune blends that mention joint support as a secondary benefit

These types of products are considered general wellness supplements and are not eligible for FSA or HSA reimbursement.
