Are Thermometers FSA/HSA Eligible?

Yes, thermometers are eligible for reimbursement with a Flexible Savings Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA).

Why Are Thermometers FSA/HSA Eligible?

Thermometers qualify for reimbursement through a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) because they are essential medical devices used to monitor body temperature and detect fever, a key symptom of many illnesses. Under IRS guidelines, medical expenses for equipment that helps diagnose, treat, or monitor a medical condition are eligible for reimbursement.

Whether used to monitor health during illnesses like the flu or to track conditions requiring regular temperature checks, thermometers serve a clear medical purpose. Their role in aiding early diagnosis and supporting health management makes them an eligible expense under FSA/HSA rules. This includes digital, infrared, and ear thermometers, as long as they are used for medical purposes rather than general wellness.

How to Purchase Thermometers With an FSA/HSA

Browse thermometers on buyFSA.com or in the buyFSA app. Add your product selection to your cart by clicking on the shopping cart icon below the product image. When you’ve finished shopping, navigate to your cart by selecting the shopping bag icon in the top right corner.

In your cart, review your order to ensure the right products are included, then click checkout to proceed to payment. Complete your contact and delivery details in the checkout screen, and add your FSA/HSA card information in the provided form. Click pay now (FSA/HSA) to make your payment and complete your purchase. No further action is needed.

Alternatively, to pay out of pocket using your regular credit card and request FSA/HSA reimbursement, fill out the same form but with your credit card details. After payment, claim your expenses by uploading your payment receipt and submitting it to your FSA/HSA provider. Essentially, include the following information:

  • Name of the provider

  • Date of purchase or service rendered (the services rendered must be within the FSA’s plan year)

  • Description of items/services rendered

  • Itemized list of products purchased with UPCs (if procuring items at a retailer that doesn’t accept FSA cards or if using a regular credit card)

  • Total amount of purchase
