Is a Vaporizer FSA/HSA Eligible?

Yes, a vaporizer is eligible for purchase with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA), but only if it is used to treat a medical condition and is marketed for therapeutic use.

Why Is a Vaporizer FSA/HSA Eligible?

A vaporizer used to relieve symptoms of respiratory conditions—such as congestion, sinus infections, colds, asthma, or allergies—may qualify as an eligible medical expense under IRS Code Section 213(d). To be eligible, the vaporizer must be intended for medical use, such as providing warm mist to ease breathing or moisturize dry nasal passages.


According to the SIGIS Eligible Product List Criteria, a vaporizer is considered FSA- and HSA-eligible when marketed for respiratory therapy or sinus relief.


FSA- and HSA-eligible vaporizers include:

  • Warm mist vaporizers for relieving cough or congestion

  • Steam inhalers labeled for treating cold or sinus symptoms

  • Pediatric vaporizers intended to support easier breathing during illness

  • Vaporizers compatible with medicated pads or inhalants (such as menthol)

To qualify, the vaporizer must serve a clear therapeutic purpose, not just provide comfort or ambiance.

What’s Not Covered?

A vaporizer marketed for general wellness, aromatherapy, or cosmetic purposes is not eligible. This includes:

  • Essential oil diffusers

  • Spa or skincare steamers

  • Devices sold for ambiance, relaxation, or cosmetic facial use

  • Vaporizers not labeled for treatment of a medical condition

To be reimbursable, the vaporizer must be used to relieve a health-related symptom or support a diagnosed condition.

How to Buy a Vaporizer with Your FSA or HSA

  • Use your FSA or HSA card at checkout (in-store or online)

  • Choose a vaporizer labeled for cold, cough, or sinus symptom relief

  • Save your receipt in case your plan administrator requests documentation

  • Avoid devices marketed for aromatherapy or cosmetic use only
