Is an MRI FSA/HSA Eligible?

Yes, an MRI is fully eligible for reimbursement with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) when ordered by a healthcare provider for diagnostic purposes.

Why Is an MRI FSA/HSA Eligible?

MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) is a diagnostic imaging technique used to detect and monitor a wide range of medical conditions. It helps evaluate soft tissue injuries, neurological conditions, tumors, spinal issues, joint problems, and more. Because it is used to diagnose or monitor a medical condition, it qualifies as an eligible medical expense under IRS Code Section 213(d).

According to IRS Publication 502, diagnostic services performed to identify or evaluate a health issue are reimbursable with FSA or HSA funds.

FSA- and HSA-eligible MRI-related expenses may include:

  • MRI scans of the brain, spine, joints, or other body parts

  • Contrast-enhanced MRI scans when medically necessary

  • Facility and radiology fees

  • Pre- and post-scan consultations with a medical provider

  • Second-opinion imaging reviews

  • Follow-up MRIs as part of ongoing treatment

What’s Not Covered?

The following are not eligible:

  • MRI scans performed for non-medical reasons (e.g., executive physicals without a diagnosis)

  • Elective whole-body scans without medical justification

  • Imaging done outside of a licensed clinical or diagnostic setting

  • Costs that are reimbursed by insurance or another party

To qualify, the MRI must be prescribed by a licensed healthcare provider as part of medical care.

How to Use Your FSA or HSA for an MRI

You can use your FSA or HSA card to pay for MRI services at hospitals, imaging centers, or outpatient clinics. If you pay out of pocket:

  • Request an itemized invoice showing the MRI type, date, and provider

  • Keep documentation from your doctor, including the referral or prescription

  • Submit all materials to your FSA or HSA administrator if reimbursement is required
