Are Antacids FSA/HSA Eligible?

Yes, antacids are eligible for purchase with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA).

Why Are Antacids FSA/HSA Eligible?

Antacids are used to treat heartburn, indigestion, acid reflux, and other symptoms related to excess stomach acid. These are classified as medical conditions, and treatments that relieve or manage them qualify as eligible expenses under IRS Code Section 213(d).

Thanks to the CARES Act of 2020, over-the-counter (OTC) medications like antacids no longer require a prescription to be eligible for reimbursement with FSA or HSA funds.

Common FSA- and HSA-eligible antacid products include:

  • Calcium carbonate tablets (e.g., TUMS®)

  • H2 blockers (e.g., Pepcid®/famotidine)

  • Proton pump inhibitors (e.g., Prilosec OTC®, omeprazole)

  • Liquid antacids (e.g., Mylanta®, Maalox®)

These products relieve symptoms of conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), acid indigestion, and sour stomach—making them qualified medical expenses.

What’s Not Covered?

While most standard antacid medications are eligible, items that are not marketed or approved to treat a specific medical condition may not qualify. For example, dietary supplements labeled for “digestive health” or “gut support” are not eligible unless prescribed for a specific medical condition and supported by a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN).

Bundled supplements that include antacids alongside vitamins, herbs, or other ingredients may also be ineligible depending on the formulation and labeling.
