Coming Soon to buyFSA

Letter of Medical Necessity support is coming soon

buyFSA is building a guided LMN review experience to help customers understand when certain products may require documentation from a licensed clinician before they can be purchased or reimbursed with FSA/HSA funds.

What is a Letter of Medical Necessity?

A Letter of Medical Necessity, often called an LMN, is documentation from a licensed medical provider explaining why a product or service is medically necessary for a specific individual. Some products may only qualify for FSA/HSA payment or reimbursement when they are tied to a diagnosed medical condition and supported by an LMN.

How the buyFSA LMN process will work

Answer a few questions

Complete a private medical questionnaire about your health needs, symptoms, and the products you are interested in.

Licensed clinician review

Your responses and selected products are reviewed by an independent licensed clinician to determine whether an LMN is appropriate.

Receive a determination

If approved, your LMN will identify the eligible product or category based on the clinician’s review. If not approved, you will not be required to purchase.

Use FSA/HSA funds if approved

Once approved, you may be able to complete your purchase using FSA/HSA funds, subject to your plan administrator’s rules.

Why some products require an LMN

🩺

Medical purpose required

Some products are only eligible when used to treat or manage a specific medical condition.

Documentation matters

An LMN helps document the clinician’s reasoning and connects the product to your medical need.

Plan rules still apply

Final reimbursement and card acceptance are still subject to your FSA/HSA plan administrator.

Important: buyFSA does not determine medical necessity, diagnose conditions, or guarantee FSA/HSA coverage. LMN decisions will be made by independent licensed clinicians, and your plan administrator may still apply its own rules.

Frequently asked questions

Does an LMN guarantee my FSA/HSA purchase will be approved?

No. An LMN may support eligibility, but final approval is subject to your FSA/HSA plan administrator’s policies.

Who reviews the LMN questionnaire?

When available, LMN requests will be reviewed by an independent licensed clinician, not by buyFSA.

Will every LMN request be approved?

No. A clinician may approve, deny, or request additional information based on your responses and the products submitted for review.

Can I purchase before my LMN is approved?

For LMN-required products, the intended process is to complete clinician review before using FSA/HSA funds.
