Are Baby Bottles FSA/HSA Eligible?

Baby bottles are not eligible for reimbursement with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA).

Why Are Baby Bottles Not FSA/HSA Eligible?

Baby bottles are considered standard infant feeding supplies and are treated as personal or family expenses rather than medical care under IRS Code Section 213(d). While they are necessary for feeding an infant, they do not diagnose, treat, or prevent a medical condition.

According to the SIGIS Eligible Product List Criteria, routine childcare and feeding products are excluded from eligibility unless they are specifically required to treat a diagnosed medical condition.

Baby bottles used for general feeding purposes do not meet this medical standard.

What’s Not Covered?

  • Standard baby bottles (plastic, glass, silicone, or stainless steel)

  • Bottle nipples and replacement parts

  • Bottle warmers or sterilizers

  • Anti-colic bottles marketed for comfort

  • Feeding systems purchased for general infant use

LMN and Exceptions

Baby bottles are not eligible under normal circumstances, even with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN).

In rare cases, specialized feeding systems may qualify if prescribed to treat a diagnosed medical condition such as:

  • Cleft lip or cleft palate

  • Swallowing disorders (dysphagia)

  • Neuromuscular conditions affecting feeding

  • Severe reflux requiring a specific medically designed feeding system

To pursue reimbursement for a medically necessary feeding system:

  1. Obtain a physician’s diagnosis detailing the medical condition.

  2. Request a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) specifying the required feeding device.

  3. Confirm with your FSA/HSA administrator whether the prescribed product qualifies.

  4. Submit the LMN and itemized receipt for reimbursement.

Standard baby bottles used for normal infant feeding remain ineligible for FSA or HSA reimbursement.
