Are Vitamins FSA/HSA Eligible?

In general, vitamins are not eligible for reimbursement with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) because they are considered supplements for general health and wellness rather than for treating or managing a specific medical condition.

According to IRS guidelines and SIGIS standards, products that promote overall well-being without addressing a diagnosed medical issue do not qualify as eligible medical expenses.

What Vitamins Are Always FSA/HSA Eligible?

Certain vitamins and supplements are always eligible for FSA/HSA reimbursement because they serve a specific medical purpose and are explicitly recognized under SIGIS guidelines. These include:

  1. Prenatal Vitamins:

    • Vitamins formulated for pregnancy to support maternal and fetal health. These do not require a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN).

  2. Fiber Laxative Supplements:

    • Products like psyllium husk or methylcellulose used to treat or manage constipation or bowel-related conditions.

  3. Glucosamine Products:

    • Typically used to support joint health and manage conditions like osteoarthritis.

  4. Glucose for Diabetes:

    • Glucose tablets or supplements specifically intended to manage blood sugar levels for individuals with diabetes.

These items are considered inherently medical and qualify for reimbursement without additional documentation.

What Vitamins May Be Eligible With an LMN?

Some vitamins and supplements may qualify for reimbursement if they are medically necessary and prescribed to treat a specific health condition. These include:

  1. Vitamin D: Eligible when prescribed to treat a diagnosed deficiency.

  2. Iron Supplements: Eligible if prescribed to manage anemia or similar conditions.

  3. Calcium Supplements: Eligible if prescribed to manage or prevent osteoporosis.

For these products, an LMN from a healthcare provider is typically required to verify their medical necessity.
