Is a Cooling Blanket FSA/HSA Eligible?

A cooling blanket is typically not eligible for reimbursement with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA). In limited cases, a cooling blanket may qualify if prescribed by a physician to treat a diagnosed medical condition and supported by a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN).

Why Is a Cooling Blanket Not FSA/HSA Eligible?

Cooling blankets are generally marketed for comfort, sleep improvement, or temperature regulation during rest. Because they are primarily designed for general wellness and not for diagnosing, treating, or preventing a medical condition, they do not meet the definition of medical care under IRS Code Section 213(d).

According to IRS Publication 502, items that promote general health or comfort are not reimbursable medical expenses. Bedding products—including specialty blankets—are typically considered personal household items rather than medical equipment.

What’s Not Covered?

  • Cooling blankets purchased for sleep comfort

  • Weighted cooling blankets marketed for relaxation

  • Temperature-regulating bedding or mattress accessories

  • Blankets used for hot sleepers or night sweats without a medical diagnosis

  • Luxury or performance sleep products

LMN and Exceptions

A cooling blanket may qualify only in rare cases where it is medically necessary to treat a diagnosed condition, such as:

  • Documented menopause-related vasomotor symptoms (e.g., severe hot flashes)

  • Certain neurological or thermoregulation disorders

  • Post-surgical recovery requiring controlled temperature regulation

  • Autism spectrum or sensory processing conditions requiring therapeutic cooling support

To pursue reimbursement:

  1. Obtain a physician’s diagnosis specifying the medical condition.

  2. Request a detailed Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) explaining why a cooling blanket is required as part of treatment.

  3. Confirm eligibility with your FSA/HSA administrator before purchase.

  4. Retain itemized receipts and submit all required documentation with your reimbursement claim.

Even with documentation, approval is not guaranteed. Most cooling blankets purchased for comfort, sleep optimization, or lifestyle improvement remain ineligible for FSA or HSA reimbursement.
