Is Dyslexia Therapy FSA/HSA Eligible?

Yes, dyslexia therapy is eligible for reimbursement with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) when it is provided to treat a diagnosed learning disability under the supervision of a licensed healthcare professional.

Why Is Dyslexia Therapy FSA/HSA Eligible?

Dyslexia is a recognized neurological learning disability that affects reading, writing, and language processing. Therapy designed to treat or manage dyslexia—such as specialized instruction or interventions—may qualify as an eligible medical expense when the therapy is part of a treatment plan prescribed by a healthcare provider (such as a physician, psychologist, or neurologist).

Under IRS Code Section 213(d), expenses must be primarily for the diagnosis, treatment, or mitigation of a disease or medical condition to qualify. According to IRS Publication 502, expenses for special education and therapy for learning disabilities are covered when recommended by a licensed provider and delivered by a qualified professional.

FSA- and HSA-eligible dyslexia-related services may include:

  • One-on-one sessions with a licensed therapist or reading specialist

  • Educational interventions recommended by a physician or psychologist

  • Speech-language therapy when related to dyslexia

  • Psychological or neurological evaluations used to diagnose and develop a treatment plan

  • Tutoring or academic support that is part of a prescribed medical treatment plan

What’s Not Covered?

The following are not eligible:

  • General tutoring or academic coaching not recommended by a healthcare provider

  • Dyslexia services provided in a general education setting without a treatment plan

  • Fees for private school tuition (even for students with dyslexia) unless the primary purpose is medical care

  • Educational materials or software unless included in a formal therapy program

To qualify, the service must be prescribed by a licensed provider and designed to treat the diagnosed condition—not simply to improve academic performance.

How to Use Your FSA or HSA for Dyslexia Therapy

You can use your FSA or HSA card to pay for eligible dyslexia therapy directly or request reimbursement for qualified out-of-pocket costs. To ensure proper documentation:

  • Obtain a written recommendation or diagnosis from a licensed healthcare provider

  • Request an itemized invoice from the therapist or clinic providing care

  • Submit documentation to your FSA or HSA administrator, if required
