Is Emergen-C FSA/HSA Eligible?

Emergen-C is not eligible for reimbursement with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA).

Why Are Veneers Not FSA/HSA Eligible?

Emergen-C is an over-the-counter dietary supplement marketed to support immune health and provide nutrients such as vitamin C, B vitamins, electrolytes, and antioxidants. Because it is used for general wellness, nutritional support, or preventive health rather than to diagnose, treat, or prevent a specific medical condition, it does not qualify as medical care under IRS Code Section 213(d).

According to the SIGIS Eligible Product List Criteria, dietary supplements are excluded from FSA/HSA eligibility unless they are specifically prescribed by a physician to treat a diagnosed medical condition. Emergen-C is categorized as a general supplement and does not meet that standard in typical use.

What’s Not Covered?

  • Over-the-counter Emergen-C drink mixes in all flavors and formulations

  • Nutrient blends marketed for hydration, immune support, or energy

  • Products purchased for general wellness, fitness, or seasonal use

  • Vitamins and minerals taken without a documented medical need

LMN and Exceptions

Emergen-C is not eligible under normal circumstances. A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) generally cannot make standard supplements like Emergen-C reimbursable because they are considered general nutrition rather than treatment of disease.

In extremely rare cases, a physician may recommend a specific nutritional product (e.g., a medically formulated supplement) to treat a diagnosed condition such as malnutrition or a deficiency that cannot be met through diet alone. Even in those cases:

  1. Your physician must diagnose the deficiency or condition.

  2. They must provide a detailed LMN specifying that the product is medically necessary and not part of a normal diet.

  3. You must submit the LMN and receipts to your FSA/HSA administrator for review.

Keep in mind that general over-the-counter supplements—including Emergen-C—remain ineligible in the vast majority of cases.
