SnoreRx is typically not eligible for reimbursement with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA). However, it may qualify with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) when prescribed by a healthcare provider to treat a diagnosed medical condition such as sleep apnea or chronic snoring that is medically documented.
Why Is SnoreRx Not FSA/HSA Eligible?
SnoreRx is a type of mandibular advancement device (MAD) designed to reduce or eliminate snoring by repositioning the lower jaw during sleep. While devices used for treating sleep-related breathing disorders can be medical in nature, over-the-counter sleep aids and general snoring devices are typically considered wellness products rather than medical treatments under IRS Code Section 213(d).
According to IRS Publication 502, dental and medical devices are eligible only when they are used to treat or alleviate a diagnosed medical condition. Because many snoring devices—including SnoreRx—are marketed for general comfort or wellness, they are generally ineligible unless a provider specifically prescribes them to treat a documented sleep disorder.
What’s Not Covered?
Over-the-counter snoring devices purchased for general snoring relief
Products marketed for sleep comfort or lifestyle improvement
Any mandibular device obtained without a prescription or LMN
Sleep aids or accessories not explicitly prescribed for a medical condition
LMN and Exceptions
SnoreRx may qualify for reimbursement only if all of the following are true:
A healthcare provider has diagnosed a medical sleep condition, such as obstructive sleep apnea or chronic snoring that requires treatment.
The provider has prescribed SnoreRx (or equivalent oral appliance) as medically necessary.
-
You obtain a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) specifying:
The diagnosed condition
Why the device is required to treat it
Confirmation that alternative treatments (if applicable) were considered
To pursue reimbursement:
Discuss your sleep symptoms with a qualified healthcare provider (e.g., sleep specialist or dentist).
Obtain a prescription and Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) that clearly delineates the medical condition and the need for SnoreRx.
Submit the LMN and your itemized receipt to your FSA/HSA administrator for review.
Pay with your FSA/HSA card if permitted, or submit the documentation for reimbursement.
Retain all receipts, LMN, and physician notes for your records.
Because eligibility depends on medical necessity and administrator review, coverage is not automatic, and many plan administrators may require additional documentation.
