Zinc is typically not eligible for reimbursement with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA). However, in certain cases, zinc supplements may qualify with a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) when prescribed by a physician to treat a diagnosed medical condition such as zinc deficiency or malabsorption disorder.
Why Is Zinc Not FSA/HSA Eligible?
Zinc supplements are classified as dietary supplements, which are generally considered personal health and wellness products rather than medical care. Under IRS Code Section 213(d), medical expenses must be primarily for diagnosing, treating, or preventing a disease.
According to the SIGIS Eligible Product List Criteria, vitamins and minerals are only eligible if they are specifically prescribed to treat a medical condition—not for general nutritional support or immune health. Over-the-counter zinc tablets, lozenges, or gummies do not meet this standard when used for everyday wellness.
What’s Not Covered?
Over-the-counter zinc tablets, lozenges, or gummies for immune support
Multivitamins or mineral blends containing zinc
Zinc supplements taken for cold prevention or general wellness
Non-prescription topical zinc creams marketed for skincare or acne
Dietary supplements without a specific medical diagnosis
LMN and Exceptions
Zinc supplements may qualify for reimbursement when:
Prescribed by a physician to treat a documented zinc deficiency, malabsorption condition, or chronic illness requiring medical supplementation; and
The expense is supported by a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) specifying the diagnosis and dosage required.
Examples of potentially eligible medical uses include:
Zinc deficiency caused by gastrointestinal disorders or poor absorption
Chronic illness or treatment side effects leading to nutrient depletion
Wound healing or immune function support prescribed for a specific condition
To pursue reimbursement:
Obtain a physician’s diagnosis and Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN) specifying zinc as part of a treatment plan.
Purchase the prescribed zinc supplement or product and retain the receipt.
Submit the LMN and itemized proof of purchase to your FSA/HSA administrator for review.
Without an LMN, zinc remains ineligible, as it is considered a general dietary supplement rather than a medically necessary treatment.
