Is LASIK FSA/HSA Eligible?

Yes, LASIK is fully eligible for reimbursement with a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA) when performed to correct a vision problem.

Why Is LASIK FSA/HSA Eligible?

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a popular form of laser eye surgery used to correct refractive vision issues such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Because it is performed to treat a diagnosed vision impairment, LASIK qualifies as an eligible medical expense under IRS Code Section 213(d).

According to IRS Publication 502, eye surgeries that correct vision are considered qualified medical expenses, making LASIK reimbursable with FSA or HSA funds when performed by a licensed provider.

FSA- and HSA-eligible LASIK expenses may include:

  • Pre-operative eye exams and vision assessments

  • The LASIK procedure itself

  • Surgeon and facility fees

  • Anesthesia or numbing drops used during the procedure

  • Post-operative medications and eye drops

  • Follow-up care and check-ups related to the surgery

What’s Not Covered?

The following are not eligible:

  • LASIK performed solely for cosmetic purposes without a vision diagnosis

  • Extended service warranties or elective enhancements not medically necessary

  • Procedures performed outside a licensed clinical setting

  • Costs reimbursed by insurance or another payer

To qualify, LASIK must be performed to correct a vision problem and not simply for convenience or lifestyle preference.

How to Use Your FSA or HSA for LASIK

You can use your FSA or HSA card to pay for LASIK directly at the provider’s office or surgical center. If you pay out of pocket:

  • Request an itemized invoice detailing the procedure, date, and provider information

  • Keep documentation of your vision diagnosis or prescription

  • Submit documentation through your FSA or HSA portal if required for reimbursement
